Why is Physiotherapy helpful even in a sound, high performance horse?
You might feel the old saying ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’! applies.
However our equine athletes walk a fine line between successful performances and injury, just as elite human athletes do. As with many things in life prevention is better than cure.
There are increasing amounts of research into injury prevention in sport horses, and the idea is that physiotherapy can support this through keeping on top of minor niggles and noticing any subtle changes in muscular development which may be an early warning of a problem developing.
This is especially important because we are dealing with non-verbal animals but the earlier we can intervene in the injury process, before it causes significant pain and/or loss of performance, the better the outcome.
