How does tendon damage occur?

There are many reasons why tendons may be damaged but one of the most common is as a result of repetitive loading during work which causes the occurrence of micro damage to the tendon fibres which gradually builds up over time (a form of Repetitive Strain Injury).

The Superficial Digital Flexor Tendon and Suspensory ligament are elastic and are used by the horse to store elastic energy and save muscular effort by using stretch and recoil to create limb movement.

This makes them vulnerable to RSI from repetitive training over the years.
